From AudioFile: Former U.S. drug czar and Secretary of Education Bill Bennett takes on the task of imparting an “American identity” to young people through myths, legends and biographies. He largely pulls it off. Bennett has obviously made a deliberate effort to represent America’s multiethnic compositiontwo of the four readers are non-white, and more than half the selections are stories of women and minorities. John McMartin does a nice job reading “Paul Bunyan” and “Yankee Doodle.” “Cosby” costar Phylicia Rashad reads four stories, including “Lewis and Clark” and “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.” Modern listeners may find the expressions of westward expansion outmoded and the presentation at times preachy. But the intended targetAmerica’s youngwill find the stories enchanting and edifying. S.E.S. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine “About this title” may belong to another edition of this title. The Hard Cover Has More Stories In It. Love this book. William J. Bennett includes beautiful compilations of American history in this great book for children. In the audio you will here, “The Legend of the Grand Canyon”, “The Pilgrims and the First Thanksgiving”, “Westward With Lewis and Clark”, “Paul Bunyan”, “Yankee Doodle”, “The Story of the Star Spangled Banner”, Remember the Alamo”, “The Tale of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot”, “Margaret of New Orleans”, “John Henry and the Steam Drill”, “The New Colossus”, (Poem of Statue of Liberty), “Martin Luther King’s Dream”, and the “Eagle Has Landed”. But there are so many more stories included in the Hard Copy. It made me sad those stories were not included in the audible version. Stories of Abraham Lincoln, Johnny Appleseed, Robert Lee and a few others. I would love a revised version that included all of these as my children and I follow along in our book. Otherwise, this is a fantastic book to share history not mentioned much in today’s school system. Great Stories of America If you could sum up The Children’s Book of America in three words, what would they be? Engaging, Diverse, Patriotic What did you like best about this story? I enjoyed the transition between all of the songs and the stories What about the narrators’s performance did you like? Since there were multiple narrators, the book did not get monotone or boring
